What is a Fertilizer Granulator?

A fertilizer granulator is a core piece of equipment in fertilizer production. Its main function is to process pre-treated fertilizer raw materials (such as fermented livestock and poultry manure, straw, and other organic materials, or urea, ammonium phosphate, and other inorganic materials) into fertilizer granules with fixed shapes (mostly granular or cylindrical), sizes (usually 2-6mm), and hardness through physical methods. It solves the problems of raw material caking, difficult transportation, and uneven fertilization. At the same time, it makes fertilizers easier to store and use, and also enhances their market value. It is widely used in the production of organic fertilizers, compound fertilizers, and biological fertilizers.

Main Types of Fertilizer Granulators

1. Granulators Specialized for Organic Fertilizers

Designed for organic raw materials with high humidity (25%-40%) and strong viscosity, there are two common types:
  • Disc Granulator: It has a simple structure and a low price (10,000-50,000 yuan). The granules produced are round, but its output is small (0.5-3 tons per hour), making it suitable for small and medium-sized organic fertilizer plants.
  • Extrusion Granulator (Flat Die / Ring Die): It does not require drying, and the produced granules have high hardness and low energy consumption. However, the die needs to be replaced regularly, so it is suitable for scenarios where high granule hardness is required.

2. Granulators Specialized for Compound Fertilizers

Adapted to the needs of inorganic raw materials with high hardness and temperature control requirements, there are two mainstream types:
  • Rotary Drum Granulator: It has a high output (5-30 tons per hour) and produces uniform granules, making it suitable for large-scale compound fertilizer production. However, it needs to be equipped with drying equipment and has slightly higher energy consumption.
  • Double-Roll Extrusion Granulator: It does not require the addition of binders or drying, featuring a simple process and energy efficiency. It is suitable for dry raw materials or heat-sensitive raw materials (such as compound fertilizers with high urea content), but the shape of the granules is slightly irregular.

Core Working Principles of Fertilizer Granulators

Regardless of the type, the core principle is to make raw materials “agglomerate into granules”, which is mainly divided into two categories:
  • Wet Process: Applied in equipment such as disc granulators and rotary drum granulators. A small amount of water or binder is added to make the raw materials roll into granules during rotation, and drying is required after granulation.
  • Dry Process: Applied in equipment like double-roll extrusion granulators. No water is added; instead, high pressure is used to press the raw materials into granules. Drying is not needed, making it more energy-efficient.

Application Scenarios of Fertilizer Granulators

  • Small and Medium-Sized Fertilizer Plants / Farms: Disc granulators or flat-die extrusion granulators are preferred. They require low investment and occupy small space, meeting the needs of local production.
  • Medium-Sized Plants: Rotary drum granulators are selected, which can realize continuous production and are suitable for production lines with an annual output of 100,000-300,000 tons.
  • Large-Scale Chemical Fertilizer Enterprises: For the production of high-end compound fertilizers (such as water-soluble fertilizers), spray granulators can be chosen. The granules produced by spray granulators have high sphericity and good solubility, but the investment is large (more than 500,000 yuan).

Key Considerations for Purchasing Fertilizer Granulators

  • Raw Material Characteristics: Choose wet-process granulators (disc / rotary drum) for wet raw materials, and dry-process granulators (double-roll) for dry raw materials.
  • Output Requirement: For small output (≤3 tons per hour), select disc / flat-die granulators; for large output (≥5 tons per hour), choose rotary drum granulators.
  • After-Sales Service: Prioritize suppliers that can provide installation and training services, and ensure timely supply of wearing parts (such as dies) to reduce the impact of equipment failures.
